From: Holy
Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church Cookbook Editors
ere's
the short story. We
have the usual problem. We need
to raise funds. We
need to go outside the membership. Not avalanches of
cash, just enough to keep the lights on and pay the Priest.
We also
needed to offer something besides the highly anticipated
annual dinners of Cabbage Rolls which we offer in the spring,
and the Chicken BBQ, which we hold in the fall. As a really
small parish in a sparsely populated area of the country,
we are just scraping by.
One of
the members suggested we put together a cookbook and get
donations that way.
Not
a bad idea!
The
announcement was made and recipes collected. After a ton
of work we finally
had our cookbook. You can peruse
the complete Table
of Contents.
There
are a total of 353 recipes if
we counted them right.
And you
know what?
It
was good. It sold out. 2 printings. People really liked the
blend
of Old
Country combined with the newer recipes.
When
I say "Old Country" I
mean old Country as
in former eastern block countries....Russia,
Yugoslavia, Poland, etc. You see, we are an Eastern Orthodox
Church. More
specifically Russian.
A
lot of the recipes in this book were brought over with our
church
founders when they immigrated to the states. Most of
the current members are descendants of coal miners. These folks
emigrated to make a better life
for
themselves
and their families.

our HISTORY.

at a couple of PHOTOS
on the official Church
Website.
If you haven't figured it out yet, we're asking for donations.
In return we will send you a cookbook.
It
comes in an ebook (PDF) format. It is pretty much a downloadable
electronic version
of the printed cookbook.
- BONUS
SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD (Its
big - almost 5Mb)
FOOD FILE - Food File is a free food database and calorie counter
for 1000s of food products.
Kelpiesoft Food File is for anyone who is interested in
what they eat, but is particularly useful for those following
a diet for health or weight loss reasons. Searching the database
is as simple as typing in the food you are looking for -
the software will display a list of matching foods as quickly
as you type. You can also refine the search by selecting
one or more of the 24 food categories.
Selecting a food displays the proportion of fat, protein
and carbohydrate contained as well as total calories and
more detailed nutritional information. Also displayed are
various 'food facts' that will assist people following diets
that restrict certain kind of foods, such as low fat, low
carbohydrate (Atkins / South Beach) or low sodium diets.
The nutritional information was compiled by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture, Nutrient Data Laboratory. This highly detailed
information on the nutritional content of foods is a useful
resource for nutritionists and other health care professionals.
We're
suggesting a monster donation of $5. The
cabbage roll recipe is worth that on it's own! You get
352 more!
